Duke Nukem Forever: Restoration Project is an upcoming unofficial fan-created project focused on the Duke Nukem Forever prototype from 2001. It is hosted on ModDB and maintained by a volunteer development group often referred to themselves as Mighty Foot Productions. It uses leaked builds of the 2001 version of Duke Nukem Forever as a foundation and provides enhanced playable content derived from those files.
Two demos of Restoration Project were released in 2022 and 2023 via Mod DB.[1]
Development and release
[edit]On May 9, 2022, builds of Duke Nukem Forever dated around August 21, 2001 and October 26, 2001, were leaked by an anonymous 4Chan user, x0r_jmp (also known as x0r), in which were circulated publicly and have served as preservation effort material for the community.[2][3] These builds were originally shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2001, and it runs on the Unreal Engine 1.[4][5][6]
Mighty Foot Production began the project after these leaks gained attention, with contributors seeking to make the prototype playable and more complete on modern systems. Public releases from the project have included playable portions described as a “First Slice,” which contain early chapters from the 2001 build, multiple maps, and additional features not present in the raw leaked files.[7][8][9] Development of the project is documented through community platforms and a dedicated YouTube channel, where gameplay footage and trailers are published. The team's updates discuss technical improvements, engine fixes, and restored content from promotional and leaked sources.
