Ziqian Liu (he/him) is a Montreal-based artist, composer, animator, and scholar whose work bridges music, sound design, cinema, and visual arts. As a multi-instrumentalist specializing in piano, French horn, and voice—and also developing skills on flute and djembe—he creates immersive musical soundscapes that interact with visual media, animation, and motion design. He combines practical expertise in sound design and composition for film and television with a rigorous academic approach, exploring the intersections of sound, music, cinematic form, and moving image art.

Ziqian’s artistic research is deeply informed by Impressionism in film and music, examining the influence of early 20th-century French composers such as Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Lili Boulanger, Germaine Tailleferre, Louis Aubert, and members of Les Six on Impressionist filmmakers including Jean Epstein, Abel Gance, Germaine Dulac, and Louis Delluc. He investigates how these composers’ harmonic, timbral, and structural innovations resonate with the visual and narrative techniques of early cinema. His work situates film sound, film music, and silent cinema within historical, aesthetic, and technological contexts, with a particular focus on cine-concerts, the preservation and adaptation of silent films, and the creation of contemporary scores that respect original cinematic intentions.

Beyond Impressionism, Ziqian explores broader aesthetic and historical intersections of music, cinema, and visual design, including studies on directors such as Vincente Minnelli and Jacques Tati, highlighting the evolving role of design, sound, and musical composition in modern filmmaking. His research and creative practice emphasize site-specific screenings, audience perception, and the integration of outdoor and indoor spaces in cinematic experiences.

In addition to his scholarly work, Ziqian is a visual artist and animator, producing work that complements his musical and cinematic practice, and he has a strong interest in silent film preservation, modern scoring practices, and the translation of historical aesthetics into contemporary media. His practice-based research blends analytical rigor with creative production, reflecting a commitment to advancing both the theory and practice of film music, sound design, and moving image art.
