Ziad Sakr (born 1999) is an Egyptian squash player. He won the under-13 title at the British Junior Open in 2012 and later represented Egypt at the World Junior Squash Championships. Sakr competed collegiately for Trinity College (Connecticut) in the United States, where he earned All-American honors and was part of a national championship team. On the PSA World Tour, he reached a career-high world ranking of No. 179 in January 2024 and returned to competition at the 2023 Kiva Open.

Early life and junior career

Sakr grew up in Tanta, Egypt, and competed internationally in junior squash. At the 2012 British Junior Open, he won the boys' under-13 title, defeating Pakistan’s Kashif Asif in the final.[1][2] He also won the Egyptian National Junior Championship three times and secured the Arabian Championship in 2014 after runner-up finishes in 2012 and 2013.[3]

In 2016, Sakr was named in Egypt’s squad for the World Junior Squash Championships held in Poland.[4][5]

Club career

Sakr played domestically for Al-Shams Club before transferring to Al Ahly Sporting Club in 2017, in a move reported by several Egyptian outlets.[6][7][8]

Collegiate career

Between 2017 and 2021, Sakr studied at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he played for the Bantams men’s squash team.[9]

As a freshman, he was selected to the College Squash Association All-American Second Team and won the Molloy "B" Division at the CSA National Singles Championships.[10] The team won the Potter Cup national championship in 2018 with an undefeated 20–0 record, during which Sakr played regularly in the top half of the lineup.[11] Over his collegiate career, he compiled a record of 42–9 and served as team co-captain in his senior year.[10]

Professional career

Sakr first appeared on the PSA Tour in 2015. After a hiatus, he returned in 2023 at the Kiva Open, where he won his opening-round match.[12] He reached a career-high world ranking of No. 179 in January 2024.[13]

Other activities

While at Trinity, Sakr co-founded Scholar Pathways, a student project that provided information on scholarships and tutoring for international students.[10] He also participated in campus groups including the Muslim Life Community, the Computer Science Club, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.[10]
