Yaad-e-Salamat is a Pakistani classical music festival held in Lahore, organized as a tribute to Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of the Sham Chaurasia gharana. The two-day event is organized by the Lahore Arts Council (Alhamra) in collaboration with the Sham Chaurasi Music Circle.[1][2]
History
[edit]The inaugural Yaad-e-Salamat festival was held in July 2022 at Alhamra Arts Center.[2] The event was a non-ticketed, public celebration co-hosted by Alhamra and the Sham Chaurasi Music Circle to honor Ustad Salamat Ali Khan.[2] Artists who performed in 2022 included Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan, Ustad Faheem Mazhar, Ustad Hussain Bakhsh Gullo, Nadir Ali Khan, Faizan Ali Khan, Chand and Suraj Khan and Shujaat Ali Khan.[3]
A subsequent edition of the festival was held in September 2024.[1] According to reports, the 2024 program again paid tribute to Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and featured classical performances by Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, Nadir Ali Khan, Faizan Ali Khan, Chand Khan, Suraj Khan, Shujaat Ali Khan, and Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan.[4][5]
Festival highlights
[edit]Yaad-e-Salamat showcases vocal and instrumental music associated with the Sham Chaurasi gharana. Raags performed during the festival include Basant, Bhupali, Asavari, Darbari, Kafi, and Thumri.[5] The 2024 edition featured tributes with historical explanations and was noted for its commitment to cultural education.[4]
In 2024, the event was co-hosted by Dr. Ali Saqlain Haider and singer Umm-e-Laila Shamsi.[4] It was part of broader efforts by Alhamra to support and promote classical music and included contributions from Alhamra Academy of Performing Arts.[1]
Organization
[edit]The festival is organized annually by the Lahore Arts Council in collaboration with the Sham Chaurasi Music Circle.[2] Events are typically open to the public and held at the Alhamra Arts Center on Mall Road, Lahore.[1] The event is part of Alhamra’s broader mission to promote classical and semi-classical arts in Pakistan.[1]
