Voltio (shown in their cars as Voltio by Mutua) is a carsharing company that operates primarily in Madrid. They started in 2022 as the first company dedicated to the sector owned by Mutua Madrileña. They started with a fleet of 400 Fiat 500e and 100 Opel Corsa and have grown ever since. Nowadays, they are the company with the highest number of cars in all of Spain.

History

[edit]

Voltio was started in 2022 by Mutua Madrileña as a 100% electric carsharing system. The company made a deal with Stellantis, and got 400 Fiat 500e and 100 Opel Corsa-e.[2] At the start, they planned to save about 1500 tons of CO2 in three years and generate 300 jobs.[3][4][5][6]

The company is named after the Spanish word for volt[7]. It has a dual meaning, as the expression "darse un voltio" which means "going for a walk" also played a part on the decison of the name. [8]

They stated that they would "reinforce their compromise with sustainable urban mobility" and that the project would "cover all of the [client's] necesities".[3]

In February 2025, they reached 1.000 cars operating in their fleet. According to the Mutua, they have 150.000 users, who have collectively made 1.3 million trips that have gone more than 12 million km and saved 1700 tons of CO2.[9]

Operations

At the start of the company, they launched with the option of paying 30 euro cents per minute when using the car, and 15 cents per minute when the car was parked.[3] The app works by choosing a car in the screen and going to it. After reserving a car, the user must get to the car in 20 minutes. If they fail, they must provide a small fine.[10] The cars can park in whatever legally possible parking space.[11]

Voltio Zone

[edit]

The Voltio Zone is the term the company uses to describe the zone in which the system operates and cars can be parked. It started in the M30 motorway and has been expanding ever since.[9][12] Notable inclusions in the zone have been the Madrid Barajas Airport in 2023, which can be acquired in a Centauro rental stop[13][14], and Boadilla del Monte in 2024,[9], whose city council habilitated special parking lots and parking spaces for those cars.[15] It also goes to Pozuelo de Alarcón.[16]

The zone is not a designated parking space, it is a designated end-of-trip space meaning that the client can exit the zone when he wants, but not end his trip there; he would need to go back.[17][18]

VoltioPlus

[edit]

VoltioPlus is an extension of Voltio, were with a 5.99[19] monthly fee the user gains 10 extra minutes to get to the car, a 10% discount in all of the rides and free insurance for every trip.[20] It is open to all clients but is free to the ones that are already insured with Mutua itself.[9] Its idea started when Voltio gave a 10% discount to every insured of the Mutua. Then, they decided to improve the offer and create VoltioPlus.[21]

Voltio Rent

[edit]

Voltio Rent is an extension of Voltio that is dedicated to renting cars that is operated primarily by Centauro. The cars can only be accesed in the rental at the airport an at Chamartín. In August of 2025, the service expanded to Valencia, Sevilla, Barcelona, Alicante and Málaga.[22][23]
