Vikram S. Gandhi is an Indian academic, investor, and entrepreneur. He is the Gerald P. Kaminsky Senior Lecturer of Business Administration in the General Management Unit at Harvard Business School (HBS). Gandhi teaches and researches topics related to sustainable investing, leadership, and the role of finance in advancing inclusive and sustainable-aligned growth.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Gandhi earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Mumbai and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar.[2]
Career in investment banking
[edit]Before joining academia, Gandhi spent over two decades in global investment banking. At Morgan Stanley, he served as Co-Head of the Global Financial Institutions Group in New York and as Country Head and President of Morgan Stanley India.[3] He later joined Credit Suisse as Vice-Chairman of Investment Banking and Global Head of the Financial Institutions Business, based in New York and Hong Kong.[4]
During his career in finance, he advised major financial institutions on mergers, acquisitions, and capital-raising initiatives, working across North America, Europe, and Asia.[5]
Academic work at Harvard Business School
[edit]Gandhi is the Gerald P. Kaminsky Senior Lecturer of Business Administration in the General Management Unit at Harvard Business School.[6] He has developed and teaches two courses in the Elective Curriculum of the MBA Program:
- Sustainable Investing, a finance and investing course that examines how capital can be deployed responsibly to generate long-term economic, social, and environmental value.
- Development While Decarbonizing: India’s Path to Net Zero, an immersive field course that explores climate-related opportunities and risks in emerging-market economies, particularly India’s energy transition and development pathway.[7]
In addition to these electives, Gandhi teaches Leadership & Corporate Accountability and has previously taught FIELD Global Immersion and The Entrepreneurial Manager in the Required Curriculum of the MBA Program.[8] He also teaches in several Executive Education programs at HBS and is an active member of the school’s Impact Co-Laboratory, a research initiative focused on impact investing and the integration of sustainability into mainstream capital markets.[9]
Gandhi’s teaching and research center on the intersection of finance and societal outcomes, particularly how investors and corporations can align business objectives with long-term environmental and social stewardship.[10]
Entrepreneurship and impact investing
[edit]Gandhi is the founder of Asha Ventures, an impact-oriented venture capital firm that invests equity capital in social enterprises with a target of market-rate financial returns.[11] The firm provides strategic and management guidance, access to networks, and advice on impact measurement and management to its portfolio companies.[12]
Its affiliated organization, the Asha Trust, engages with government, business, and civil society on policy issues related to sustainability and inclusive growth. The Trust is also a co-founder of The Blended Finance Company, which structures blended-finance transactions to address societal and environmental challenges.[13]
Board and advisory roles
[edit]Gandhi serves on the board of the Grameen Foundation, and is a co-founder of Ashoka University.[14] He also advises global investors such as the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) on sustainable and India-related opportunities and is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee.[15]

[edit]Gandhi regularly contributes to discussions on finance, sustainability, and climate transition through articles, interviews, and podcasts.[16] His perspectives have been featured on platforms such as IDR Online, the Observer Research Foundation, and ETF Partners’ “In Conversation With” series.[17]
Personal life
[edit]Gandhi divides his time between India, the United States, and the United Kingdom.[18]
