Vijayalakshmi Deshmane or Vijayalaxmi Deshamane is an Indian surgical oncologist and academic. She is a former director of the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology and the founder of the Jeevan Jyoti Trust, which focuses on providing healthcare in rural areas.[1] She was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 2025 for her contributions to medicine.[2][3] She has been recognized internationally for her work and was profiled in the "Inspirational Women in Surgery" series by Flinders University, Australia.[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Deshmane was born in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, and faced significant economic hardship in her youth.[5] She overcame these challenges, including selling vegetables to support her family, before pursuing a medical education.[6][7] Her early struggles and determination have been widely reported in the press.[8]
Career
[edit]After completing her medical education, Deshmane specialized in surgical oncology. She served as the Director of the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, a premier cancer treatment and research center in Bangalore, from October 2007 to February 2008.[9]
She later founded the Jeevan Jyoti Trust to provide healthcare, particularly cancer care, to underserved and rural communities.[10] Her work focuses on making advanced surgical care accessible to the poor.[11] Deshmane is a vocal advocate for cancer prevention, stating that "cancer can be prevented through community awareness" and emphasizing the role of public health education.[12]
