Career

[edit]

Messing earned her PhD at the Corvinus University of Budapest in 2001.[1] At the Centre for Social Sciences (TK, HUN-REN) she has served as research professor and as director of the Institute of Sociology.[1] She has also been affiliated with Central European University, including the Center for Policy Studies and the Democracy Institute.[1][2]

Research

[edit]

Migration attitudes and populism

[edit]

Messing and Bence Ságvári produced comparative analyses of European attitudes toward migration in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES). Their reports map change before and after 2015 and examine patterns of immigrant integration across Western Europe.[3][4][5] Their 2021 peer-reviewed article connects anti-immigrant attitudes, values, and preferences for right-wing populism using European Social Survey data.[6]

Media representation and Roma studies

[edit]

With Gábor Bernáth, Messing conducted content-analytical studies of Hungarian media coverage of Roma communities and, later, refugees and migrants. Their book „Vágóképként, csak némában”: Romák a magyarországi médiában (1998) examined national media portrayals of Roma.[7] Their Médiakutató article (2015) analyzed Hungarian government communication during the refugee crisis.[8][9][10][11]

Inequalities, discrimination and methodology

[edit]

Messing has published on labour-market discrimination against Roma, barriers to mobility among highly qualified Roma youth, and the conceptualization and measurement of ethnicity in research and corporate practice.[12][13][14] She has also written on methodological issues in researching Roma migration and on survey mode effects.[15][16]
