vKirirom Pine Resort (Khmer: វិគីរីរម់ ផាញ រេស៊ត) is an eco-tourism resort located in Kirirom National Park, Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia. The resort project began in 2011 under the leadership of Japanese entrepreneur Takeshi Izuka, and it officially opened to the public in April 2014.[1]
Overview
[edit]The resort is situated at an elevation of about 700 metres within Kirirom’s pine-covered plateau. Its cooler climate compared to Cambodia’s lowland areas, along with waterfalls, lakes, and forests, have made it a destination for eco-tourism and agri-tourism.[2]
History
[edit]- 2010 – Takeshi Izuka first visited Cambodia through the Entrepreneurs' Organization, exploring potential sites in China, India, and Malaysia before choosing Cambodia due to its climate, business environment, and eco-tourism potential.[1]
- 2011 – Development began under A2A Town (Cambodia) Co., Ltd.
- 2014 – The resort opened to the public in April.[3]
Development
[edit]vKirirom Pine Resort covers approximately 2,000 hectares of land inside Kirirom National Park.
- Phase 1 – Development of 500 hectares, with only 20% allocated for construction and 80% preserved as forest.
- Phase 2 – Plans for expansion to more than 6,000 hectares.[1]
Environmental measures include:
- Patrol stations to prevent illegal logging and poaching.
- A “Tree-to-Tourist” policy (one tree planted per visitor).
- Restrictions on construction (maximum 20% of land use).
- Prohibition on the sale or consumption of wild animals.
- Energy-saving practices, including rooms without air conditioning.
Facilities and Activities
[edit]Accommodation options range from villas and bungalows to traditional Khmer cottages, glamping tents, and camping sites.[2]
Activities offered include trekking, cycling, horse riding, petanque, zipline, rock climbing, and team sports. The resort also operates organic farms that supply produce to its restaurants and provide agri-tourism experiences.[1]
Social and Tourism Significance
[edit]The resort has been cited in Cambodian and international media as part of efforts to diversify Cambodia’s tourism industry beyond Angkor Wat, Tonle Sap, and coastal areas.[3][2]
Access
[edit]The resort is accessible by road, approximately two hours from Phnom Penh, with shuttle services provided.[2]
