- USA Track & Field San Diego-Imperial
USA Track & Field San Diego-Imperial Association (often abbreviated USATF SD-I) is the official regional governing body of track and field, cross country, road running, and race walking in San Diego and Imperial counties, under the umbrella of USA Track & Field (USATF). It is a volunteer-run nonprofit that administers memberships, sanctions events, and develops athletes across age groups. [1]
History
[edit]The San Diego-Imperial Association was established in 1979, the same year that the national governing body USA Track & Field was founded. [2]
The association oversees two of the longest-running regional event series:
- The Summer Nights Track & Field Series, founded by coach Paul Greer, which runs annually from December through July/August. [3]
The region also annually hosts the USA National Race Walking Olympic Trials in Santee, California, making San Diego-Imperial one of the few associations to host a national-level Olympic qualifying event. [4]
Governance
[edit]USATF San Diego-Imperial is governed by a Board of Directors, which includes four executive officers elected for two-year terms:
- President
- Vice President
- Treasurer
- Secretary
As of 2025, the Board of Directors is composed of the following officers and chairs: [1]
- President: Paul Greer

Committees oversee specific disciplines and administrative functions, and their chairs are either elected by members of their constituency or appointed by the president. [1]
Programs
[edit]Summer Nights Track & Field
[edit]The Summer Nights Track & Field Series is described as the premier "all-comers" meet series in Southern California. It welcomes athletes of all ages and levels. Meets rotate among venues such as Balboa Stadium, Canyon Crest Academy, Patrick Henry High School, and University City High School. [3]
USA National Race Walking Trials
[edit]Santee, California, located within the San Diego-Imperial Association, annually hosts the USA National Race Walking Olympic Trials. The event attracts national and international athletes vying for Olympic qualification in the 20 km race walk. [4]
Youth Athletics
[edit]The Youth Committee of USATF San Diego-Imperial serves the entire city of San Diego and surrounding Imperial County. [5] Athletes in this category compete as part of Region 15 of USA Track & Field, which includes Southern California associations. Member clubs organize and compete in youth track meets across the season, culminating in qualification opportunities for the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships through the Region 15 Championships. [6]
Notable Alumni
[edit]Several prominent athletes have competed under the USATF San Diego-Imperial banner before achieving national and international recognition:
- Monique Henderson – Olympic gold medalist in the 4×400 meters relay at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games.
- Chris Adamson – T11 para-athlete, multiple-time CIF champion and national record holder in the 100m for U20 and U17 categories.
- Kennan Christon – CIF sprint champion and Division I football player at USC, recognized as one of San Diego’s fastest high school sprinters.
Masters Athletics
[edit]The Masters Track & Field program within the San Diego-Imperial Association is overseen by Dr. Jason Karp, who was appointed as Masters Chair in 2024. [7]
The highlight of the masters calendar is the annual Pain-McMahon Masters Meet, held in May or June, which also serves as the association’s Masters Championship. The meet attracts high-profile competitors from across the region and is regarded as one of the premier masters events in Southern California. [7]
Notable athletes who have competed in the San Diego-Imperial masters program include:
- James Lofton – Pro Football Hall of Famer and national broadcaster, who has competed in masters sprint and relay events.
- Willie Banks – Former world record holder in the triple jump and long-time San Diego resident, active in masters competitions and the broader track & field community.
- Nick Christie – U.S. Olympian in race walking, who has participated in association competitions and served as an ambassador for masters and elite development.
Para-Athletics
[edit]The Para-Athletics program in the San Diego-Imperial Association is championed by Danny Perez, who serves as the Para Athletics Chair. [5]
San Diego has become a national hub for para-athletics, in large part due to its proximity to the Chula Vista Elite Training Center (formerly the U.S. Olympic Training Center). The facility regularly hosts national team training camps and serves as the base for many of the world’s top para-athletes.
Notable para-athletes associated with the San Diego-Imperial region include:
- Lex Gillette – World Champion in the long jump and multiple Paralympic medalist.
- Beatriz Hatz – 2024 Paris Paralympic bronze medalist in sprints.
- Derrick Loccident (D-Loc) – Elite amputee sprinter and para track athlete.
- Noelle Lambert – Paralympian and advocate for adaptive sports.
- Justin Phongsavanh – Paralympic javelin medalist.
- Jaydin Blackwell – Rising U.S. para sprinter.
- Isaac Jean-Paul – Paralympic medalist and world-class high jumper.
The Association reported in 2024 that twelve athletes from San Diego-Imperial competed at the most recent Paralympic Games. [7]
