The Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University (UJOP) is an academic institution that specializes in both general and specialized language instruction and professional preparation for international students intending to pursue higher education at Czech universities. UJOP was established in 1974[1] as part of Charles University, while its roots trace back to the early 1950s.[2]
Activities of the Institute
[edit]UJOP’s operations are based on four primary areas:
[edit]- Preparation for university studies in Czech and English[3]
- Teaching Czech as a foreign language for Charles University – including Erasmus students, international students, and professionals from various fields – as well as for the general public. Courses are offered at all proficiency levels, with varying intensi-ty and duration, including summer schools and profession-focused language courses (e.g. for doctors, social service workers, etc.)
- Methodology of teaching Czech as a foreign language, offered to the public, govern-ment institutions, and interested individuals both in the Czech Republic and abroad[4]
- Standardized language examinations
Foundation Programmes
[edit]The institute organizes foundation programmes in both Czech and English for international applicants. These programmes encompass language training, academic skills development, and cultural orientation, serving as a pathway to university studies in the Czech Republic.[5]
Research and Academic Activities
[edit]UJOP engages in academic research, methodological development, and publishing in the field of teaching Czech as a foreign language and preparing international students for univer-sity study in the Czech language.
The Methodological and Professional Centre (MOC) is responsible for internal methodol-ogy of the institute and offers public methodology courses for teaching Czech as a foreign language.[6][7]
One of the textbooks developed at UJOP is Česky v Česku, a Czech language textbook de-signed for Slavic-speaking students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are seeking refuge in the Czech Republic.[8]
Language Examinations
[edit]The Research and Testing Centre of UJOP (VTC), established in 2006[9], created the CCE – Certified Examination in Czech for Foreigners.
UJOP is the only educational institution in the Czech Republic that is a full member[10] of Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE)[11], which brings together prominent lan-guage testing organizations such as the Goethe-Institut and Instituto Cervantes. As an ALTE member, UJOP undergoes regular audits to ensure its exams meet all required international standards.
Among the exams offered by UJOP are:
- Certified [12] with international recognition
- The Czech Language Exam for Citizenship [13][14](ZKOBČ)
UJOP Locations
[edit]Study Centres:
- Prague Study Centre[15]:
- [16] – Students enrolled in one-year foundation programmes study at the university’s mini-campus, the Krystal Centre
- Voršilská[17] – Czech language courses for the general public are held at the Voršilská Centre in a historic building of a former convent, which until recently served as a Charles University dormitory (Arnošt of Pardubice)

- Methodological and Professional Centre (MOC)[19]
