Tarun Souradeep (born 9 October 1967) is an Indian physicist and cosmologist. He is Director of the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, on deputation from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune.[1] He works in the areas of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and gravitational-wave astronomy, contributed to the European Space Agency’s Planck mission,[2] and was a coauthor of the 2016 paper reporting the first direct detection of gravitational waves.[3] As a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, he shared in awards such as the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics,[4] the Gruber Cosmology Prize,[5] and the Princess of Asturias Award (2017).[6]

Education and career

[edit]

Souradeep obtained a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1988,[7] an M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Pune in 1994, and a Ph.D. in Cosmology from IUCAA in 1995.[8]

From 1995 to 2000, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and Kansas State University.[1] He also had a brief stint as an automobile design engineer at Eicher Research Centre in 1988.[9]

He joined IUCAA as faculty in 2000,[10] and from 2019 to 2022 served as Professor and Chair of Physics at IISER Pune.[11] He formally took office as Director of RRI in January 2022.[1]

Research

[edit]

Souradeep has conducted work on statistical methods in CMB anisotropy and isotropy testing.[12] Under his leadership, the IUCAA group contributed to the Planck mission, applying bipolar spherical harmonics to probe isotropy violations.[13]

In 2018, he coordinated the CMB-Bhārat proposal to the Indian Space Research Organisation for a mission to detect primordial gravitational waves via CMB B-mode polarization.[14]

Since 2009, Souradeep has served as co-proposer and science spokesperson of LIGO-India, and led site selection efforts.[15][16] He commented publicly following the Union Cabinet's 2023 approval of the LIGO-India project.[17][18]

Honours and awards

[edit]
  • DST Swarnajayanti Fellowship (2005–06)[19]
