Myhal is a rare Slavic surname of Eastern European origin, derived from the given name Mykhailo (Ukrainian) or Mihalj (Croatian), both vernacular forms of Michael.
Notable people
[edit]- George E. Myhal — Canadian investment executive and philanthropist. He is the chairman of Partners Value Investments Inc. and a former senior executive with Brookfield Asset Management.[1]
A graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, he and his wife Rayla made major philanthropic contributions to the university, including funding the construction of the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship.[2] The 110,000-square-foot facility opened in 2018 as a hub for interdisciplinary engineering education and research at the university.[2]
- Rayla Myhal — Canadian philanthropist and civic leader. She is Vice Chair of the Royal Conservatory of Music and president of the Myhal Family Foundation.[1]
Together with her husband George, she has supported major Canadian initiatives in higher education, health care, and the performing arts.[1]

- Natasha Myhal — American academic and Assistant Professor of Indigenous Environmental Studies at The Ohio State University.[6]
A citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, her research focuses on Anishinaabe knowledge systems, Indigenous governance, and community-based environmental restoration.[7] Her academic work has been profiled by the Yale Group for the Study of Native America, which highlights her research on Odawa lake sturgeon restoration and Indigenous environmental ethics.[7]
- Danylo (Daniel) Myhal (1949–2024) — Ukrainian-Canadian activist known for unfurling a “Freedom to Ukraine” banner during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal in protest against Soviet repression.[8]
The Ukrainian World Congress later commemorated his act as an enduring symbol of Ukraine’s independence movement, and in 2022, the same flag was ceremonially raised in Kyiv.[8][9] The Ukrainian Canadian Congress described him as “a lifelong advocate for freedom and democracy.”[9]
