Sunbet is an online sports betting and casino gaming platform operated by Sun International, a South African hospitality and gaming group. Founded in 2010, Sunbet offers betting services across multiple sports, including football, rugby, cricket, horse racing, and esports, alongside a wide range of online casino games.[1]
History
[edit]Sunbet was launched in 2010 as Sun International’s online gaming division, extending the company’s traditional casino and resort offerings into the digital space. The platform enables users to place bets on various sports and access online casino games.[2]
On 14 March 2023, Sunbet was formally acquired by Sun International, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary.[3]
Sunbet has experienced significant growth, with revenue increasing by 60.6% to R1.2 billion for the year ending December 2024.[4]
Recent years have seen Sunbet expand its offerings to include live in-play betting and virtual sports. In 2023, the company extended operations to Botswana with the launch of SunBet Botswana.

Country Manager Tsholofelo Makgoeng highlighted the rigorous licensing process and the significance of Sunbet’s entry, noting that it enables Batswana to legally participate in sports betting while supporting the local economy.[5]
The Gambling Authority of Botswana recognized the launch as a key development in the country’s gaming sector.
