Title | President, the Klar Organization |
Steven A. Klar is an American real estate developer and philanthropist. He is president of the Klar Organization, a New York–based real estate development, building, and brokerage firm.[1] In 2012, he drew national press attention for listing his triplex penthouse at Manhattan’s CitySpire tower for $100 million, then among the most expensive residential listings in the United States.[2][3]
Early life and education
[edit]Klar is the son of Henry A. Klar, a New York real estate lawyer who founded Klar Realty in 1947, and Gloria Klar.[4]
He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Toledo in 1969 and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1973.[5] He is admitted to practice law in New York and Florida and is a member of several bar associations, including the American Bar Association and the Nassau Jewish Lawyers Association.[6]
Career
[edit]Klar assumed leadership of the family’s real estate firm at age 27.[7] Under his direction, the company expanded into homebuilding in 1979 and later into a diversified real estate development and brokerage business based on Long Island.[7]
By 2001, the Klar Organization reported building and selling about 55,000 homes in the New York metropolitan area, including affordable housing and luxury communities.[8] In the early 2000s, the company developed several large-scale age-restricted housing projects, including the Waterways at Moriches, a 400-unit community described in Big Builder magazine as part of a growing Long Island market for buyers wishing to downsize without leaving the region.[9]
Following the housing downturn of the late 2000s, Klar’s firm took over and completed several distressed developments. In 2010, the company revived the Riverview project in Patchogue, a 35-unit townhouse complex left unfinished by its original builder.[10] Other completed projects included The Links in North Hills and Lakebridge in Kings Park.[11]
In 2012, Klar listed his three-floor CitySpire penthouse, measuring about 8,000 square feet, for $100 million.[12][13][14]
Military service
[edit]Klar served on active duty in the United States Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he received the Outstanding Soldier Award in 1969.[15]
Politics
[edit]In 1978, Klar ran as a Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives in New York’s First Congressional District, seeking the seat vacated by Otis G. Pike.[7] In 1980, he founded Long Island Citizens for Kennedy, a political organization supporting Senator Edward Kennedy.[16]
Philanthropy
[edit]Klar has served on the board of directors of the Long Island Builders Institute, the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, and the Nassau County Museum of Art.[17][18]
He received the Israel Peace Medal from the State of Israel Bonds in 1986, was recognized by the American Cancer Society’s Long Island division in 1994, and was honored by the Tilles Center in 1996. Later honors included the United Jewish Appeal–Federation Man of the Year award in 2000 and the Interfaith Nutrition Network’s Humanitarian of the Year award in 2002.[5]
In 2014, Klar endowed the Klar Leadership Academy at the University of Toledo College of Business and Innovation.[19] He later established the Klar Family Leadership Development and Innovation Management Program at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. [20][21]
The University of Toledo named Klar a Distinguished Alumni of the Year in 2022. In 2025, he delivered the university’s undergraduate commencement keynote address and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.[22]
