Shyam Lal Gupta (1912 – 1989) was an Indian publisher, educationist, philanthropist, and politician. He was the founder of S. Chand and Company. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1969.[1][2][3]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Shyam Lal Gupta was born in 1912 in Delhi. His grandfather, Master Amir Chand, was involved in the Indian independence movement and martyred in 1915 for his role in Lord Hardinge Bomb Case.

Gupta’s father, Niranjan Lal, died when he was five years old, and his mother, Gomti Devi, died when he was eighteen. He studied at Commercial and Ramjas Schools in Delhi and later received a diploma in commerce from the Government Polytechnic, Kashmiri Gate.

Publishing Career

[edit]

S. Chand was founded in 1939, in a by-lane of Chandni Chowk by Shyam Lal Gupta, as a part of a nationalistic effort to provide a voice to Indian authors and educate India's population.[4][5][6][7]

Publishing in India was at the time dominated by the British, and most books and magazines were imported from England.[8] Shyam Lal Gupta entered the market by publishing two books at a lower cost than the prevailing rates. The first textbook to be published by S. Chand was a "Textbook of Physical Chemistry" by Prof. Bahl & Tuli. The revised edition of the book is still in the market.[9][10]

Shyam Lal Gupta was a founding member of the The Federation of Indian Publishers and served as its first president from 1974 to 1976.[11]

Political Career

[edit]

Gupta was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar, serving between 1972 and 1978 as a member of the Congress (O), which later merged into the Janata Party.[12]

Philanthropy and Institutions

[edit]

Gupta established the Shyam Lal Charitable Trust, which supported initiatives in education, healthcare, and employment.[13]

In 1964, he founded Shyam Lal College, affiliated with the University of Delhi, in East Delhi. The foundation stone was laid by then Vice-President of India, Dr. Zakir Husain. He also established the Shyam Lal Nursing Home[14] to provide affordable medical services.[15]
