Draft:Shoaib M Khan

Shoaib M Khan

Shoaib M. Khan (born January 1983) is a British human rights lawyer and media commentator. He is known for his work in human rights, immigration, public, and discrimination law, and for regular media commentary on related issues in the UK. He is Chair of the UK’s Human Rights Lawyers Association. https://hrla.org.uk/executive-committee/

Education and early career

[edit]

Khan studied law at City University, London and completed the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law.[1] He has worked with several legal and human rights organisations, including law centres, Citizens Advice Bureau, and international law NGOs.[2] He is a mediator, a former school governor, a Fitness to Practice Panel Pool Member at the Association for Nutrition and a former trustee of Birkbeck College Students Union.

[edit]

Khan has represented clients challenging unlawful detention, deportation, and breaches of human rights law. He has acted for detainees on hunger strike in immigration removal centres and for individuals whom the Home Office attempted to deport.[3]

He also represented the person who was, at the time, believed to be the longest-held detainee under UK immigration powers.[2]

Khan has submitted evidence to parliamentary committees on human rights and immigration matters, which has been cited in official reports.[4]

Media and commentary

[edit]

Khan frequently provides legal analysis on UK and international media outlets, including BBC, Sky News, GB News, TalkTV, LBC, and TRT World. He has debated and been interviewed by public figures such as Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nigel Farage.

In September 2025, Khan appeared on LBC to discuss a case involving an individual convicted of sexual assault. Khan argued that deportation should not automatically occur without considering his asylum claim properly. The interview attracted widespread criticism on social media, with Elon Musk saying "Contemptible behavior by that lawyer. No empathy for the victims, only for the criminal."

Selected media appearances

  • Sky News: "Immigration lawyer: Rwanda plan is just not workable"[9]
  • GB News: Debate on European Convention on Human Rights and UK migration policy[10]
  • BBC Victoria Derbyshire Show: Immigration detention and Opelo Kgari case[11]

He has written for or been cited in publications such as:

Khan also attempts to ensure accuracy in the media generally. He engages with the media directly, in order to ensure fair coverage of human rights and the legal system. His complaints have resulted in numerous media corrections about the law and human rights, including on articles by notable people such as ministers (https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/11/12/chris-grayling-errors-daily-mail_n_6144182.html), and this led to one tabloid accusing him of having “appointed himself as some sort of watchdog” on such issues.

Newspapers have provided staff with training and guidance as a direct result of his complaints, and promised to do more to ensure accuracy. He has also been invited to meet with newspapers’ senior management to discuss how coverage of legal issues can be improved and made fairer.
