Sergio Chierici
Born (1966-10-16) October 16, 1966 (age 59)
La Spezia, Italy
Occupation(s)Composer; choral conductor; music scholar

Sergio Chierici (born 16 October 1966) is an Italian composer, choral conductor and music scholar. His output spans choral, organ and instrumental music as well as electronic works. He has also contributed to the Italian national cataloguing standards for musical instruments (SM/SMO) issued by the cultural-heritage authority ICCD.[1][2]

Biography

[edit]

Chierici studied music and humanities with teachers including Emilia Fadini, Oscar Mischiati and Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, and holds diplomas in piano and organ as well as a degree in Letters with a thesis in music history.[3] He has performed in Italy and abroad and has collaborated with labels such as EMA Vinci and Sonus.[4]

In 1996 he founded the EsaEnsemble, a vocal group focused on medieval repertory, which he has directed.[5] Since 2011 he has served as director of the Unione Corale La Spezia.[6][7]

Works and releases

[edit]

Chierici’s discography as a composer includes electronic and instrumental titles such as Fama (2021) and the concept album Ecoscapes (2025), alongside earlier piano cycles revisited in recent recordings (e.g. Suite per pianoforte 1981, Bagatelle per pianoforte 1986).[8][9][10]

As a conductor he led a complete recording of Monteverdi’s Scherzi musicali (1607) with EsaEnsemble and Baschenis Ensemble (Tactus TC 561309).[11][12][13][14]

Reception

[edit]

The Monteverdi recording drew attention in the early-music press. Gramophone covered the release in its reviews section,[15] as did Early Music Review, which discussed interpretive choices,[16] and MusicWeb International, noting the rarity of complete recordings of the 1607 collection.[17]

Performances

[edit]

Programmes and listings document appearances in Italy and abroad; for example, the Allgäuer Zeitung announced an Ottobeuren concert featuring Chierici (organ) and Anna Caprioli (soprano).[18]
