Scarecrow Arts LLC is an indie game development studio and publisher that began operation in early 2015. The company is a remote studio that also produces animation, visual effects, motion graphics, and video interviews. For the last decade many projects created solely, or collectively by its members have been funded and distributed under the Scarecrow Arts brand in gaming, software[1], film and animation.
Scarecrow Arts has developed several free scripts for Adobe After Effects and a decently sized library of templates for sale on their own website and on popular distribution sites such as Pond5, Motion Elements, Motion Array, and ProVideoFactory.
Early Years (2014-2017)
[edit]It began as a motion graphics company label for founder, Malcolm Smith, to accept commissions to make various intros and outros for YouTubers in mid-2014. In early 2015 work began on a Captsone Project for his graduation requirements in the form of his first video game: The Story Goes On. The game had successfully got enough traction in the now-depreciated Steam Greenlight program[2] to be placed into Steam Early Access in 2015 under the developer name Scarecrow Arts. Malcolm soon teamed up with a Swedish programmer named Anton Bergåker and publisher KISS Ltd now restructured as Kiss Publishing Ltd.in the United Kingdom[citation needed].
Before the game was set to release on Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux: The Story Goes On got a third team member, Brandon Driesse, in September 2015 to help with the writing and some art assets.
In 2016 the game had officially signed on to sell on the Microsoft's Xbox One upon release with the promise of a timed-exclusive couch co-op game mode.[3] This extended development into early 2018.[4]
History (2018 - Present)
[edit]2018
[edit]On March 2nd 2018 The Story Goes On released on Steam[5] and Xbox One[6] with very average scores.[7]
On March 24th 2018 the Texas-based LLC was formed with the 3 members of the TSGO Dev Team: Malcolm Smith, Anton Bergåker, and Brandon Driesse.
2019 - 2020
[edit]In the summer of 2019 Nick Conter, an Argentinian animator, approached Brandon Driesse about making a video game and 37 days later NEAR DEADline released on August 12th 2019 for Newgrounds.com[8] with a very positive reception and one year later published on Steam: released for free by Scarecrow Arts on August 12th 2020.[9]
In 2019 Scarecrow Arts becomes a 3rd party Nintendo publisher. Brandon and Anton set out to put The Story Goes On on the Nintendo Switch. The game would need to be ported over from GameMaker 1.4 to version 2.0 in order to support the Switch's hardware. TSGO would be re-released on March 2nd 2020, the two year anniversary, and also bring couch co-op to all the other platforms.[10]
2021
[edit]2021 ends with the release of LUCKYBOY on December 25th, Christmas Day: a capstone animated short film directed by Domenic Romano, produced by Brandon Driesse with Malcolm Smith as a collaborator, and sponsored by Scarecrow Arts financially.[11]
2022 - Present
