The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and The Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) are a regional collaboration that addresses climate change and seeks alignment with global environmental goals. It focuses on regional partnerships and developing infrastructure to reduce emissions and protect ecosystems. In November 2022, Saudi Arabia announced the establishment of an MGI Secretariat, to be hosted in the Kingdom, along with a financial contribution of $2.5 billion to support related projects and governance. [1] It was announced on March 27, 2021, by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is a domestic program aimed at implementing a long-term climate and environmental strategy. It is organized around three main objectives: reducing emissions, increasing vegetation through afforestation and land restoration, and protecting ecosystems. Since its launch in 2021, over 85 related projects have been announced.[2]

Vision & Target

[edit]

The SGI includes plans to rehabilitate approximately 74 million hectares of land and increase greenery within Saudi Arabia. One of its stated goals is to plant 10 billion trees, equivalent to restoring over 74 million hectares of land. These efforts are intended to improve ecological balance, enhance air quality, and mitigate issues such as sandstorms.[3]

Sub-Initiatives

[edit]

Among the most prominent initiatives is the large-scale tree planting program, with the target of 10 billion trees in the Kingdom over several decades. This is estimated to rehabilitate around 40 million hectares of degraded land and expand tree cover significantly. According to official data, between 2021 and 2023, 43.9 million trees were planted and 94,000 hectares of land were restored.[4]

In August 2022, 24 initiatives were outlined as part of the tree-planting goal, scheduled for different phases:[5]
