Sanket Goel (born 31 December 1977) is an Indian professor working with the department of electrical and electronics engineering at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, Hyderabad, Telangana. He is the principal investigator of the MEMS, microfluidics and nanoelectronics (MMNE) Lab[1][2] and founding director of Cleome Innovations Pvt. Ltd.[3][4] As of 2025, he is listed as Dean – Research and Innovation at BITS Pilani.[5][6][7]
Scientific contributions
[edit]Goel's research centers on MEMS, microfluidics, and nanoelectronics, with applications in sensing, energy harvesting, and storage.[8] He has published on topics such as sustainable fuel,[9] laser-induced graphene,[10] and biofuel cell technologies.[11] He has co-filed 24 patents and edited two books on microelectronics and electrochemical devices.[12][13] His lab (MMNE Lab[14]) and associated company (Cleome Innovations[15]) work on minimal-scale sensing platforms and energy systems. The group has developed droplet-based microfluidics,[16] underwater solar cell designs,[17] and 3D-printed devices for extraterrestrial settings.[18] Other projects include tools for soil diagnostics,[19] DNA amplification,[20] and nanomaterial processing.
Since 2021, his team has also worked on biomedical technologies, including a wearable glucose monitoring patch using sweat,[21] an implantable system powered by blood glucose,[22] and a field-ready PCR system.[23] Their work has also included space-oriented diagnostic platforms[24] and low-cost diabetes test kits.[16]
Honors and awards
[edit]Goel has won several awards, honors and distinctions, including the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Invitational Fellowship (2021),[25] Fulbright Fellowship (2015)[26][27] and Dr C R Mitra Best Faculty Award by Prof V S Rao Foundation / BITS-Pilani (2021). In 2022, he has become the fellow of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and Institution of Engineers (IE).[28]
Goel is with the editorial team of several journals including IEEE Sensors Journal,[29] IEEE Transactions on NanoBioscience,[30] Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering,[31] Applied Nanoscience,[32] and Journal of Nanobiotechnology.[33] Earlier, he was in the Editorial Board of IEEE Access Journal. He has also been appointed as a Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE Sensors Council for a term of 2 years from 2024-2026.[34]
On September 5, 2025, Prof. Goel was among the 21 faculty members nationwide recognized by the President of India for excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and institution-building through the National Award for Teachers.[35] This award was presented by the President of India at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.[36][37]
