Sandoway Resort is a luxury resort located on Ngapali Beach in the Rakhine State of Myanmar. Opened in 1999, it was one of the first internationally focused resorts established in post-colonial Myanmar.[1] The resort is noted for its traditional Burmese architecture, its use of local materials, and its "barefoot luxury" concept.[2]
History
[edit]The name "Sandoway" is derived from the British colonial name for the nearby town of Thandwe.[3] The resort was established in 1999 and developed by Italian partners Pietro Tura and Alberto Peyre, alongside Myanmar partner Aung Myat Kyaw.[4] At the time of its opening, Ngapali Beach was a relatively undeveloped destination for international tourism. The project was orchestrated to cater to high-end travelers while maintaining the ecological footprint of the original beachfront.[4]
The resort is often cited as a benchmark property for tourism in Myanmar, credited with helping to establish Ngapali as a luxury destination.[1]
Expansion
[edit]Following the success of the original resort, partners Pietro Tura and Aung Myat Kyaw continued to expand their portfolio on Ngapali Beach. They subsequently opened The Residence by Sandoway, a boutique property adjacent to the main resort, and Art of Sand Resort, a separate property located nearby on the same coast.[5][6]
Architecture and design
[edit]The resort was designed by Alberto Peyre, whose architectural style is influenced by traditional Southeast Asian and Burmese design principles.[7] It spans approximately 6 acres (2.4 hectares) of beachfront property with a 450-meter beach frontage. The structures are constructed primarily using locally sourced materials such as hardwood, stone carvings, and palm-thatched roofs.[8]
The resort consists of 59 two-story villas and cottages scattered among coconut palms. The design emphasizes integration with the natural landscape; the buildings were positioned to avoid cutting down existing trees during construction.[9]
A notable design feature of the villas is the open-plan interior on the ground floor which leads to a private veranda, with a spiral staircase connecting to a loft bedroom on the upper level.[10]
Facilities
[edit]The Sandoway Resort features 59 rooms, divided into deluxe rooms, cottages, and villas.[9]
Dining and Leisure
[edit]The resort includes an open-air restaurant that specializes in local seafood caught by the nearby fishing village of Jade Taw, as well as international cuisine. A swimming pool is located near the beachfront.
Library and Cinema
[edit]The resort houses a library overlooking the Bay of Bengal, which is distinguished by wooden columns carved by local artists from Mandalay.[11] Adjacent to the library is a 58-seat movie theatre, which features a carved wooden door and an elaborate ceiling design. The theatre is used for screening films for guests as an alternative to in-room televisions.[10]
Guest Experience
[edit]Guests arriving at Thandwe Airport are traditionally transferred to the resort in restored Chevrolet buses from the World War II era.[7]
Reception
[edit]As one of the first luxury properties in the region, Sandoway Resort has been described by international travel curators as a "sophisticated, lesser-known gem" that set the standard for high-end accommodation in Ngapali.[12] The resort was featured in Condé Nast Traveler as a key destination in the country's emergence as a luxury travel hotspot,[13] and was subsequently highlighted in the publication's guides to the best hotels and beaches in Myanmar.[14][15]
The resort's architecture and "barefoot luxury" concept have been praised for maintaining a distinct sense of place, with Ampersand Travel characterizing it as a "heavenly beachside oasis" that prioritized local craftsmanship over modern concrete construction.[2]
