Education

[edit]

How Does Change Happen? Scenes From the Frontlines of Activism

[edit]

Gonçalves' first non-fiction book How Does Change Happen? chronicles stories from activists and organisers, exploring their approach to making a meaningful difference in some of the biggest issues of the 21st century.[9] Gonçalves investigates the assumption that having a ‘positive impact’ in the world is often relegated to ‘personal’ endeavours, and explores ways communities have resisted collectively, and fought against the individualising forces surrounding them.[10]

Interviewees include Pinar Aksu (Maryhill Integration Network)[11], Edgar Kolling (Brazil's Lanless Workers' Movement / Movimento Dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra)[12], Tim Hewes[13], Sue Parfitt (Christian Climate Action)[14], Nick Troy (Unite Hospitality)[15], among others.

Through conversations with those activists and organisers, Gonçalves recounts stories of protest and the fight for change, from a community of landless workers in Southern Brazil, to chefs unionising their workplace in Glasgow, Scotland. These narratives consider the opportunities and challenges that are part of the challenges of creating change.[16]

Everything Mixtape

[edit]

Gonçalves publishes bi-monthly interviews with creatives under the title of Everything Mixtape via Substack.[5][17] Notable interviewees have been George the Poet, Chloe Radcliffe, Heather Parry, and Musa Okwonga, among others. In a "deep chat" tone, Gonçalves reflects with them about creativity, literature, comedy, and personal journeys.
