Saša Pukl (Maribor, 26 July 1970) is a Slovenian professional basketball referee, who has been a FIBA international referee since 2000 and is regarded as one of the top European officials of his generation.[1][2]

He has officiated at multiple Olympic Games, FIBA World Cups, and EuroBasket tournaments, and has also been selected in four EuroLeague Final Four tournaments.[3][4][5][6]

Refereeing career

Pukl began officiating professionally in Slovenia in the mid-1990s and was nominated as a FIBA referee in 1995.[7] [1] His international career includes appearances at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.[8]

He has also officiated at the FIBA Basketball World Cup and EuroBasket tournaments, and he is regularly selected for high-level international and continental games.[1] Pukl is an experienced referee in the EuroLeague, where he has handled both regular-season and playoff games for many seasons.[3] Also, he has been one of the most experienced referees in the Adriatic basketball tournament, the ABA League.[9]

In 2012, he officiated the game between Boston Celtics and Istanbul Fenerbahce Ulker.[10] Notably, Pukl officiated the 2015 EuroLeague Final between Real Madrid and Olympiacos.[11]

Recognition

Pukl is respected in the European officiating community for his composure and consistency, and has frequently been involved in referee training and development programs under FIBA Europe.[12] In overall, he has had four appearances at EuroLeague Final Fours. He also has been recognised by his/her colleagues by being elected as the UEBO president.[13][14][15]
