SSR Cinemas is an integrated entertainment company operating across Eastern India, functioning as a cinema exhibitor, film distributor, and producer. Founded in 2009 by Ratan Saha, the company has revitalized historic theaters while expanding its distribution network across West Bengal and Tripura, becoming a key player in regional cinema infrastructure.[1]

History

[edit]

Incorporated on 24 November 2009, SSR Cinemas began as a cinema exhibition venture before diversifying into distribution and production.[2]

In 2020, the company reopened Kolkata's historic Ajanta Cinema screen.[2] In 2024, it restored Globe Cinema after a 20-year closure, transforming it into a modern dual-plex.[1] The same year, it announced plans to open 100 additional cinema halls across Bengal.[3] In 2025, SSR Cinemas distributed major Durga Puja releases including Dhumketu.[4]

Leadership

[edit]

The company was founded by Ratan Saha, who brings over four decades of experience in the cinema industry. He established iconic venues such as Ajanta Cinema in Kolkata and Rupasi Cinema in Agartala, and also pioneered Tripura's first multiplex-shopping complex, M L Plaza.[5] His long-standing contribution to the exhibition sector laid the foundation for the company’s growth.

The next generation of leadership is represented by Satadeep Saha, the current Managing Director, who diversified SSR Cinemas into distribution and production. He played a key role in initiating premieres of acclaimed films such as Man Patanga[6] and has announced ambitious plans to launch more than 100 new screens across Eastern India.[3] Alongside his business ventures, he is also a national-level cricket coach accredited by the BCCI at Level "A," which reflects his ability to balance sporting commitments with entrepreneurship.

Operations

[edit]

SSR Cinemas specializes in the restoration of heritage theaters into modern complexes while simultaneously expanding its footprint across smaller towns and cities. The company reopened Globe Cinema as a dual-plex with 239-seat and 197-seat auditoriums after two decades of closure.[7] Ajanta Cinema was also revived in 2020, reestablishing its place in Kolkata’s entertainment circuit.[2] In Tripura, SSR operates properties including Rupasi in Agartala and SSR Cinemas in Khowai, both of which feature updated amenities designed to meet contemporary viewing standards.[8]

The company has also established itself as a strong distribution player in the Eastern Region Circuit of West Bengal and Tripura. It has distributed major Bengali releases such as Dhumketu in 2025,[4] as well as popular Hindi films including Simmba, URI, and Pink. Its distribution activity extends into Assamese cinema, with titles such as Noise & Silence handled under its banner.[9] It has further positioned itself as a hub for premieres, including the launch of Man Patanga in collaboration with regional filmmakers.[6]

Beyond distribution and exhibition, SSR Cinemas has also ventured into production, with a focus on regional filmmaking in Tripura under the guidance of Satadeep Saha. This vertical complements its other businesses and creates an integrated presence across the entertainment value chain.

Expansion Strategy

[edit]

The company has focused on converting defunct theaters into modern dual-plexes.[7] It has also announced plans for more than 100 new screens across Eastern India.[3] Its expansion strategy targets Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities including Amtala in West Bengal, Khowai in Tripura, and Balurghat in West Bengal.

Cultural Impact

[edit]

SSR Cinemas revived Kolkata's Globe Cinema in 2024, restoring a cultural landmark.[1] It has enabled record-breaking Pujo releases.[4] In Tripura, it has addressed long-standing screen shortages.[5] The company also supports regional filmmakers through integrated services.[6]
