Ronald Quintero is a Honduran mountaineer, CrossFit Coach, and motivational speaker. He is known for being the first Honduran to summit Mount Everest, and the first Central American to complete the Everest-Lhotse traverse.[1][2]
Biography
[edit]Early life and education
[edit]Quintero was born in Camasca, Intibuca, Honduras, near the border with El Salvador.[2] His grandmother and uncles raised him after his mother migrated to the United States when he was two years old. Growing up in a farming community, Quintero helped with agricultural work and household chores from an early age. He walked several kilometers each day to attend primary school in his village.[3][4]
In 1998, at 16, he moved to Berkeley, California, with his mother and continued his education. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University in 2011.[5][4]
Career
[edit]Quintero started mountaineering in 2012 when he climbed Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States, in California's Sierra Nevada.[5][2] Since then, he has explored and climbed several peaks in the Eastern Sierra range and has become an experienced high-altitude mountaineer.[4]
In 2022, Quintero became the first Honduran to summit Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. He also completed the Everest-Lhotse traverse, making him the first person from Central America to do so.[3][6][2][4]
As of 2024, he has climbed five of the highest mountains in the world.[4]
In addition to mountaineering, Quintero is a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer and has competed in several endurance sports. He has appeared on the NBC reality television show Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge, where teams of athletes compete in obstacle races.[5]
Quintero also works as a CrossFit level 1 coach at several San Francisco Bay Area gyms. From July 2016 to May 2018, he coached at Grassroots CrossFit near the University of California, Berkeley campus. His role included assisting and leading On-Ramp fundamentals sessions, daily workouts (WOD), beginner Olympic weightlifting instruction, weekend community classes, and supervising open gym hours.[3][7]
In May 2018, he joined Brick Northern California as a CrossFit l1 Coach, working for over four years until July 2022.[3] In November 2024, Quintero began working as a CrossFit Level 2 Coach at Exhale Fitness, continuing his coaching career.[7]
