Romain Cayla also known as Romano or Romanoartist, born in 1982 in Paris, is a French visual artist whose work often centers on storytelling. Rather than focusing only on form or abstraction, his paintings and projects are built around narratives—images that suggest characters, events, or fragments of a larger tale. Beyond the studio, he is also recognized for creating art directly in public spaces, where his work interacts with everyday life and reaches people outside traditional galleries. In addition to his individual practice, he has contributed to the independent Parisian street art collective Le Mouvement, a group known for bringing creative expression into the city’s streets.
Biography
[edit]Romano was born in 1982 in Paris. He attended evening classes at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris while working as an art director in a communication agency.[1][2]
Artistic career
[edit]In 2013, Romano co-founded the Parisian collective Le Mouvement with artists Riks and Tiez. The collective seeks to bring citizens together through urban art and collaborative creation. One of their emblematic projects, “Les parapluies”, consists of photographic collages representing Parisian couples under umbrellas, displayed in different neighborhoods of Paris.[3]
In 2017, Romano created a monumental fresco entitled Gabin & Aïssa on the facade of the Point Éphémère in Paris (3 × 5 m). The work depicts a symbolic encounter between the actor Jean Gabin and a contemporary woman, Aïssa, represented against a colorful stained glass background combining references to the three monotheistic religions. Through this dialogue between classical heritage and popular culture, Romano seeks to sacralize diversity and question "living together" in French society.[2]
In 2018, he took part in an international artistic project in Hong Kong, where the city's tramway was covered with street art works, underlining his presence in the global urban scene.[4]
In parallel with his work as a visual artist, Romain Cayla is also active as a producer of contemporary and street artists, musicians, and filmmakers. Through the association Européens Sans Frontières he directs, he designs and produces projects combining artistic creation, civic engagement, and cultural innovation. His productions include transnational campaigns of animated films and street art works carried out in partnership with international press cartoonists (including Cartooning for Peace) and broadcast by media such as Arte, France Télévisions, Euronews, or Canal+.[5][6]
Techniques and style
[edit]Romano combines street art techniques with traditional painting. He uses collage, stencil, photography, and mural interventions to create hybrid works that fit into narrative figuration. His creations explore social and visual themes, seeking to provoke dialogue between the work and the public.[1] They also show a blend between French classicism and hip-hop culture of the 1990s.[2]
