Rockette (born Roy Keisha Rockette) is an American Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and recording artist. She is best known for co-writing the platinum-selling single ICU by Coco Jones, which won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards,[1] earned an NAACP Image Award,[2] and charted on the Billboard Hot 100.[3]
Early life
[edit]Rockette was born in Davenport, Iowa, and raised in Water Valley, Mississippi. One of her earliest musical memories came at the age of three, when she would repeatedly watch The Bodyguard to sing along with Whitney Houston. She has described the experience as deeply formative, saying it “engraved my mind at such a young age.”[4]
Career
[edit]Songwriting and collaborations
[edit]Rockette rose to prominence as a songwriter with the hit single ICU, recorded by Coco Jones. The track won a Grammy Award,[5] earned an NAACP Image Award,[6] and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[7] It also entered the Billboard Hot 100 and received a remix featuring Justin Timberlake.[8]
She has also written for artists including K. Michelle, Ari Lennox, Inayah Lamis, and Kiana Ledé.[9] Later in her career, Rockette signed with Sony Publishing, expanding her reach as a songwriter across R&B, pop, and hip hop genres.[10]
Solo projects
[edit]On November 11, 2022, Rockette released her debut EP, Confidence. The project includes songs centered on empowerment and self-expression. She has described the title track, Confidence, as “a love song to myself … a gentle reminder to have confidence in my ability to show up for myself. I can deliver my vision for myself better than anyone else can.”[11]
