Rhode Island Division of State Parks and Recreation, simply called Rhode Island State Parks, is a Rhode Island state government agency charged with managing Rhode Island State Parks including beaches, state parks, and public land uses, as well as overseeing Seasonal Pass Registration.[1] Rhode Island State Parks is a division under the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, and is the governing body in Rhode Island to issue State Lifeguard Certifications, as well as the Rhode Island State Park Naturalist Program.[2][3][4]

Rhode Island State Parks is partnered with the program Litter-Free Rhode Island, with initiatives such as Carry In, Carry Out to prevent littering on state parks and elsewhere in the State of Rhode Island.[5][6] Rhode Island State Parks is one of the biggest agency subdivisions in the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, managing areas such as the Charlestown Breachway State Beach, Arcadia Management Area shared with the Division of Forest Environment, Burlingame State Park, Snake Den State Park, among more areas.[7][8]

Formation

Rhode Island State Parks was preceded by the Rhode Island Department of Public Works Parks and Recreation Division between 1952-1965, which became a part of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.[9] Other branches including the Rhode Island Metropolitan Park Commission of 1904, Rhode Island Division of Forests, Parks and Parkways 1935, Rhode Island Department of Public Works Parks and Recreation Division of 1952, and Rhode Island Department of Natural Resources of 1965, the lobbying of the Public Parks Association of 1883 to 1903 played a significant role in the creation of Rhode Island State Parks.[9]

The Rhode Island Division of State Parks and Recreation across the entirety of the State of Rhode Island, excluding land overseen by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, manages over 8,200 acres of land, including parks, beaches, campgrounds, bike paths, historic sites, picnic areas, trails, athletic fields, dams, fishing access, and boat ramps.[10]
