Draft:Radwan Abu Ayyash

Radwan Abu Ayyash (15 June 1950 – 1 March 2013) was a Palestinian journalist, media executive and public official. He was the founding head of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) from 1993/1994 to 2005 and later served as an undersecretary at the Palestinian Ministry of Culture until 2009.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Abu Ayyash was born in the Askar refugee camp near Nablus on 15 June 1950 to a family displaced in 1948 from the village of al-Jammāsīn al-Sharqī (Jaffa District).[1] He completed schooling in the West Bank and studied English at a teacher training centre before working as a schoolteacher. He later earned a BA in English from Birzeit University and undertook graduate studies in media.[1]

Career

[edit]

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Abu Ayyash worked in Palestinian print journalism, including editorial roles in Jerusalem, and helped establish professional media bodies. He served as president of the Arab Journalists’ Association in the occupied Palestinian territory and directed the Arab Media Center in Jerusalem.[1] In 1993–1994 he was appointed to establish and lead the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation; contemporary reporting noted his position as director-general during the PBC’s launch period.[2] He headed the PBC until 2005 and subsequently served as undersecretary at the Palestinian Ministry of Culture to 2009.[1]

Abu Ayyash was detained several times by Israeli authorities around 1990–1991 under administrative detention; rights groups at the time cited accusations of affiliation with Fatah and involvement in the uprising.[4]

He was also active in public and civil society roles noted in Palestinian biographical references, including work connected to the Palestinian delegation at the 1991 Madrid Conference and coordination roles in NGO fora.[5]

Death

[edit]

Abu Ayyash died on 1 March 2013 in Ramallah; Palestinian media and the PBC publicly mourned his passing, and local dailies reported official condolences.[3] See also Arabic-language obituaries and death notices published the same day.[6][7]
