Pets4Homes is largest dedicated pet-classifieds platform in the United Kingdom.[1] It lists companion animals for sale or adoption and provides breed profiles and pet-care information.

History

[edit]

Pets4Homes launched in 2005.[2] In May 2016, a Pets4Homes representative appeared before the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Sub-Committee of the UK Parliament during an evidence session discussing online sales of pets and challanges around enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. [3]

In August 2019, Pets4Homes was acquired by Pet Media Group, a Swedish operator of online pet and equestrian marketplaces.[2][4] Pet Media Group later expanded through acquisitions including Italy’s AnnunciAnimali (2021), the Netherlands’ Puppyplaats (2021), and the Spanish platform MundoAnimalia (2022–23).[5][6][7]

Platform and features

[edit]

The site lists companion animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and reptiles for sale or adoption in the UK, and it publishes breed information and general pet-care articles.[8] Licensed breeders can create their own profile on the site that is surfaced in a breed and geography-based breeder directory. [9]

The platform publishes data on listing activity, pricing and demand trends. This information has been cited in reporting on shifts in the UK pet market, including increased online interest in puppies during the COVID-19 pandemic,[10][11] as well as breed-specific price changes, such as rising average costs for English Bulldogs.[12][13]

In 2020, Pets4Homes launched a protected deposit and escrow feature intended to reduce fraud in remote transactions.[14] The company later introduced a broader payments and buyer-protection system known as “Pet Payments”.[15]

In 2022, Pets4Homes introduced optional identity verification for sellers using third-party identity-checking technology.[16]

Welfare and standards

[edit]

Pets4Homes moderates listings, restricts certain categories, and aligns its rules with the Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG) minimum standards.[17] Pets4Homes has been referenced in discussions about the risks associated with buying pets online, including advice urging prospective owners to follow safety checks when sourcing animals.[18][19] In 2023 several UK online marketplaces, including Pets4Homes, committed to updated best-practice standards for pet advertising.[20][21]

Public and policy engagement

[edit]

The role of online platforms in pet sales has been examined by the UK Parliament. In 2016, Pets4Homes participated in an evidence session on the sale of domestic animals.[3] Subsequent committee reports and government responses have continued to consider pet sales, welfare regulations, and enforcement issues.[22]

Ownership

[edit]

Pets4Homes is operated by Pet Media Group, a Stockholm-based company founded in 2018 that develops and acquires online pet and equestrian marketplaces. The company has received investment from firms including Verdane, Otiva and Back in Black.[2][23]
