The Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) University Roadshow was an educational outreach programme conducted by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group in Malaysia from 2019 to 2023.[1][2][3] It was the first programme of its kind to specifically combine chemical engineering education with the palm oil industry, engaging students through technical presentations and industry discussions focused on palm oil processing and sustainability.[1][4]
Background
[edit]The POPSIG operates as a member-led division within IChemE, concentrating on knowledge exchange and professional development within the palm oil processing sector[5]. The group initiated the University Roadshow in 2019 to bridge the gap between industry practice and academic education, while promoting sustainable practices within Malaysia's palm oil sector.[4]
The programme involved visits to Malaysian universities offering chemical engineering degrees, featuring discussions on industry sustainability, safety, market dynamics, and career prospects for graduates, with contributions from the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), industry practitioners, and academics.[4]
Malaysia is the world's second-largest palm oil producer,[6] making industry-academia collaboration particularly relevant for local engineering education. The roadshow addressed the need for chemical engineering graduates with specialized knowledge of palm oil processing technologies and sustainability standards.[7]
Programme Structure
[edit]The roadshow generally followed a standardized format across participating institutions, featuring:[8]
Technical Sessions
- Overview of palm oil processing
- How chemical engineering principles can be applied in the industry
Industry Perspectives
- The contribution of palm oil to Malaysia’s economy and society
- The sustainability journey of the palm oil processing sector
- An introduction to sustainability certification schemes
- Career opportunities for chemical engineers in the palm oil processing industry
Chartered Chemical Engineer Pathway
- Benefits of becoming a Chartered Chemical Engineer
- Steps, requirements, and support available for achieving Chartered status
- How professional recognition can enhance career progression
Interactive Components
- Panel discussions with academic and industry practitioners
- Student networking opportunities
- Q&A sessions
Participating Universities
[edit]The programme visited universities across Malaysia through both physical and virtual sessions, reaching over 2,400 students[9]. In some cases, repeat visits were made to the same institution to engage different cohorts of students.[10]

Awards Presented
[edit]In 2021, the University Roadshow introduced student awards to acknowledge outstanding contributions in palm oil processing knowledge sharing and sustainability. These included the POPSIG Best Post-event Report Award and the POPSIG Article Honorarium, which recognize excellence in event reporting and article writing on palm oil-related topics.[11][12][13][14]
COVID-19 Response
[edit]The programme adapted to pandemic restrictions in 2020 by transitioning to virtual delivery.[15] Online sessions maintained the core educational content while enabling participation from additional universities previously constrained by geographical limitations[16]. The virtual format also facilitated contributions from speakers and industry experts through video conferencing platforms, while maintaining interactive elements such as live polling.[17]
Recognition
[edit]In 2022, the programme received recognition as one of the Top 20 Youth Sustainable Projects by the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, acknowledging its contribution to sustainability education.[18][9]
Industry Context
[edit]The roadshow operated during a period of increased focus on palm oil sustainability[17], coinciding with Malaysia's implementation of mandatory Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification[19] and growing international demand for sustainable palm oil products[20]. The roadshow addressed industry requirements for graduates familiar with both technical processes and sustainability frameworks.
