Mundo Marino is a public aquarium and marine exhibition centre located in the seaside district of El Rodadero, Santa Marta, Colombia. It combines educational, scientific, and touristic functions under the commercial name *Mundo Marino*.

Overview

[edit]

The aquarium was inaugurated in 1999 as the Fundación Museo del Mar Mundo Marino. It features 24 panoramic aquariums and a large exhibition pool ("megapiscina") designed to present the biodiversity of the Caribbean Sea.[1][2]

Educational and environmental role

[edit]

Mundo Marino promotes educational programs for schools and visitors to raise awareness about marine ecosystems. It has partnered with local authorities such as the District Department of Environmental Sustainability (DADSA) for conservation projects,[3] and with the regional environmental authority CORPAMAG in initiatives such as the release of rehabilitated sea turtles.[4]

Founder

[edit]

The project is linked to the legacy of Colombian naval officer and conservationist Francisco Ospina Navia, known as "El Capi", who promoted marine education and eco-tourism in the Caribbean region.[5][6]

INVEMAR, based in Santa Marta, is a national research institute under the Ministry of Environment, focused on coastal and marine ecosystems.[3]

Facilities and activities
