Mohammad Ali Bdeir
[edit]Mohammad Ali Bdeir (Arabic: محمد علي بدير; born 1909) was a Jordanian businessman and politician. He is known for founding the Jordan Electricity Company in 1938, which introduced electric power to Amman.[1]
Early life
[edit]Bdeir was born in Damascus, Ottoman Empire, in 1909. He moved with his family to Amman in 1915 and was educated in Damascus and Beirut.[2]
Business Career
[edit]In 1927 Bdeir established the Transjordan Building Materials Company, one of the earliest trading firms in Amman.[3]
During the 1930s, he co-founded the Jordanian Tobacco and Cigarette Company and opened a carpentry workshop.[4] In 1938, he founded the Jordan Electricity Company, which supplied Amman with its first electric power.[5]
Bdeir later participated in the creation of several major enterprises, including the Jordan Petroleum Refinery, Jordan Phosphate Mines, Jordan Cement Company, Jordan Insurance Company, and Arab Airlines.[6]
Bdeir was elected to the Amman Chamber of Commerce in 1933 and later held positions including secretary, vice president, and president.[7]
Politics and public life
[edit]Bdeir was elected to the Jordanian Parliament in 1951.[8][9] He also served in the Senate and the National Consultative Council.[10] A hall at the University of Jordan, along with streets and schools, is named in his honor.[11]
