Fresh Del Monte Produce

[edit]

In 1996, Abu-Ghazaleh acquired Fresh Del Monte Produce[3] during a period of significant financial difficulty, when the company carried approximately $300 million in debt. Within a year of his leadership, the company returned to profitability and became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 1997.[4]

By 2007, Forbes reported that Fresh Del Monte had achieved its strongest quarterly performance in four years, attributing the results to investor confidence in the company’s turnaround strategy.[5] During the 2008 financial crisis, Fresh Del Monte emphasized operational efficiencies to stabilize earnings.[6]

Under Abu-Ghazaleh’s leadership, Fresh Del Monte expanded internationally and became known for developing new pineapple varieties, including Gold®, Pinkglow®[7], Honeyglow®, Rubyglow®[8], and Del Monte Zero®. The company has received sustainability awards and recognition as one of the World’s Most Trustworthy Companies[9]. In 2025, Fresh Del Monte received a SEAL Business Sustainability Award[10] and launched initiatives such as biofertilizer production from pineapple residue[11].
