Mikael Samsonov (Belarusian: Мікаэл Ефімавіч Самсонаў, Russian: Микаэл Ефимович Самсонов, born in 1977) is a Belarusian virtuoso cellist and winner of international competitions.
Life and career
[edit]Mikael was born in Minsk in a Jewish family. He began learning to play the cello at the Republican Gymnasium-College at the Belarusian State Academy of Music with Vladimir Perlin. At the age of 11, Mikael made his debut on the stage of the Belarusian State Philharmonic with a concert by Saint-Saëns for cello in A minor.
Mikael studied at the Belarusian State Academy of Music, and later continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Stefan Popov. In 2004, he graduated with honours from the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts in the class of Natalia Gutman.[1] He also studied at the Cologne University of Music with the Alban Berg Quartet and Boris Pergamenschikow, and at the Karlsruhe University of Music with Jörg-Wolfgang Jahn.
Mikael Samsonov has appeared in engagements conducted by, among others, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Dmitri Yurowski, Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle, Timo Handschuh, Sebastian Tewinkel and with orchestras such as Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Virtuosi di Praga, South-West German Chamber Orchestra, Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras of the Minsk Philharmonic and others. Among his chamber music partners, he has performed with Hyeyoon Park, Nicolas Rimmer, Konstantin Lifschitz, Tianwa Yang, Katia Skanavi, Nicolas Chumachenco, Dmitri Berlinsky, and others, and his international career includes concerts held in the United States, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Switzerland, Lithuania, Latvia, Italy, United Kingdom and other countries.
