Michael McDonell is an American clinical psychologist at Washington State University Spokane who works on treating substance use disorders and serious mental illness.[1]
McDonell has collaborated with multiple indigenous communities.[2] He is also a longstanding member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences.[3]
Early life
[edit]McDonell was born in Denver, Colorado on February 23, 1976. He later married Naomi Chaytor PhD in 2004.[4]
Education
[edit]McDonell got his bachelor's degree at Gonzaga University in psychology and sociology. He continued his education at Washington State University, Pullman where he received a master's degree in psychology and a PhD in clinical psychology.[4] McDonell completed his predoctoral psychology internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He went on to complete his postdoctoral fellowship in child psychopathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.[5]
Notable contributions
[edit]McDonell is a leader in the research and implementation of contingency management as a treatment for substance use disorders.[6] Contingency management (CM) is a treatment that gets peoples reward pathways back in balance.[7] For over a decade McDonell has led research demonstrating that CM is an effective intervention in various settings and for various purposes such as for alcohol use disorders.[8] in addition McDonell has shown that CM is still effective when treating addiction in patients with cooccurring serious mental illness.[9][10] McDonell has collaborated alongside indigenous communities to find that CM is effective when it is culturally adapted to the communities it is being used in.[11][2] McDonell is a leading expert in the use of alcohol biomarkers such as ethyl glucuronide[12] and phosphatidyl ethanol[13] to improve the assessment and treatment of alcohol use disorder. McDonell has been cited in 3987 articles referencing his achievements in contingency management and other similar topics.[14]
