Melissa Goodhart Choi is an American mathematician and the director of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory. She was appointed on July 1, 2024.

Education and early life

Choi has stated that her path to mathematics began with music.[1] Choi attended Ithaca College, where she received a bachelor's degree in mathematics.[2] She went on to receive her PhD in applied mathematics from North Carolina State University in 1999, with a dissertation titled Analysis And Implementation Of A Model For Radio-Frequency Bonding Of Adhesives In Composites. Her dissertation was advised by H. Thomas Banks.[3]

Career

Choi joined the MIT Lincoln Lab in 1999 as a member of the technical staff. She began working in the Advanced Systems Concepts Group, and in 2006 became its assistant leader.[4] She transferred to be the assistant leader of the Systems and Analysis Group, later becoming its leader. She subsequently lead the Active Optical Systems Group before becoming head of the Homeland Protection and Air Traffic Control Division in 2019. While in that role, she established the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Group. In 2019, she became assistant director of the Lab, with oversight over five of its nine divisions. [5]

Choi has also served on several committees of the broader US defense community. She served as a member of the Threat Reduction Advisory Committee, where she led the Chinese CWMD Operations Study.[6] She served for six years on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, including a term as vice chair. She is also a member of the Defense Science Board’s Permanent Subcommittee on Threat Reduction.[5]

Recognition

Choi was named as an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in its 2023 class of fellows.[7]
