Mehran Aminian (Persian: مهران امینیان) is a Canadian–Iranian musician, singer-songwriter, and producer. Active since the early 2000s, he is recognized for blending Persian and Western rock traditions with politically charged lyrics. Aminian has been covered by Persian-language media outlets such as Voice of America Persian and his music has accompanied protest movements including Woman, Life, Freedom.[1]
Early life
[edit]Mehran Aminian was born in 1978 and developed an early interest in guitar and composition. Before launching a solo career, he performed in bands and collaborated with other musicians in Iran and abroad.[2]
the Persis
[edit]In the mid-2000s, Mehran Aminian co-founded the Persian rock group the Persis, serving as lyricist, composer, and lead vocalist. The band gained attention for original progressive rock compositions in Persian.
In 2010, Persis released the album Melodious Silence, which marked Mehran Aminian’s first major record as a frontman.[2] The record included several tracks that later became part of his repertoire and introduced him to wider audiences in the Iranian diaspora.
In addition to the album, the Persis occasionally released singles that were credited individually to band members. These releases blurred the line between group and solo output and served as a stepping stone toward Mehran Aminian’s later independent career.[3]
Solo career
[edit]After moving to Canada, Mehran Aminian pursued his solo projects and released several single tracks , however he officially began his solo career with the album Mohmal Bafi, released in July 2023 by Pardis Records Inc.[4] The eight-track album was written by Mehran Aminian, with arrangements and production by Masoud Homayouni, mixing and mastering by Ali Kamali, and distribution by United Voice.[5]
Following Mohmal Bafi, he released further singles, including Kenaretam Ke Bejangim (2023), inspired by the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, and Mikhandam (2025).[6][7]
Protest and political themes
[edit]Mehran Aminian’s solo work frequently engages with political and social issues in Iran:
- In 2021, while still transitioning from the Persis, Mehran Aminian collaborated with Babak Amini on Bekhan Ba Man, presented as a protest anthem on VOA Persian.[8]
- In 2023, Kenaretam Ke Bejangim (“I’ll Fight Beside You”) was released in solidarity with the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.[6]
- In February 2024, Aminian condemned the detention of protest artists such as the rapper Vafadar in an interview with VOA Persian, emphasizing that arrests cannot silence music.[1]
Musical style
[edit]Mehran Aminian’s compositions fuse Western rock guitar and pop structures with Persian melodic traditions. His lyrics often reflect themes of exile, resilience, and the struggle against repression.
