Megabonk is a 2025 roguelike survival game developed and published by solo developer vedinad.[1][2] Described as a 3D "survivors-like" game inspired by titles such as Vampire Survivors, it features procedurally generated maps, automatic combat against hordes of enemies, and character progression through randomized upgrades.[3] The game was released for Microsoft Windows and Linux on Steam on September 18, 2025.[4]

Gameplay

[edit]

Megabonk is a third-person roguelike survival game in which players navigate procedurally generated 3D maps with verticality, fighting waves of enemies and bosses while automatically attacking.[5] Experience gems collected from defeated enemies allow players to level up and select from random upgrade offers, enabling synergistic builds.[6] Movement mechanics include sliding, jumping, and speed boosts for enhanced mobility and combat depth.[7] The game offers 20 unlockable characters with unique abilities, over 70 items, and 240 quests. Meta-progression is achieved through "Silver" currency earned via challenges to permanently unlock content.[8]

Development

[edit]

Megabonk was developed single-handedly by vedinad using the Unity engine over one year, launching on September 18, 2025, despite advice to delay release.[9][10] A demo was available prior to launch.[11]

Reception

[edit]

Megabonk received "Very Positive" reviews on Steam, with 41,120 user reviews (94% positive).[12] On Metacritic, it holds a user score of 8.3/10 based on 61 ratings, though no Metascore is available due to insufficient critic reviews.[13]

Critics praised the game's addictive gameplay loop, innovative 3D perspective with vertical movement, satisfying build-crafting, and high replayability, often comparing it favorably to Vampire Survivors.[14][15][16] GamesHub awarded it 4/5, lauding the refreshing 3D take and overpowered builds while criticizing repetitive challenges, difficulty spikes, and "memey" humor.[17] Lords of Gaming scored it 8.5/10, highlighting its tension, soundtrack, and character variety.[18]

Commercially, Megabonk was a major success, selling over one million copies in two weeks and peaking at 88,500 concurrent players on Steam.[19] It was recommended by Palworld developer John 'Bucky' Buckley as an example of a fun game to play.[20]
