Maltego is an all‑in‑one platform for open‑source intelligence (OSINT) and cyber investigations, developed by Maltego Technologies GmbH, headquartered in Munich, Germany.[1] According to the company, its customers include the FBI and INTERPOL, as well as major financial firms and companies in the Dow 30.[2]

The platform supports both basic OSINT investigations for novice users and advanced analysis of large datasets for experienced analysts. It integrates internal data with external data sources and includes tools for real‑time collection, monitoring, and preservation of social media intelligence used in public safety efforts, risk management, and legal proceedings.[3]

History

[edit]

Maltego was originally developed by Paterva, a company based in Pretoria, South Africa. In 2019, Maltego Technologies in Munich assumed responsibility for global customer‑facing operations and later technology development and management.[4]

Certification and compliance

[edit]

In 2023, Maltego Technologies received ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security management,[5] with certification details listed on IAF CertSearch.[6] The company states that it complies with the GDPR.[7]

Charlesbank investment

[edit]

On 18 April 2023, Maltego Technologies was acquired by Charlesbank Technology Opportunities Funds, managed by Charlesbank Capital Partners, for an undisclosed amount. Charlesbank committed more than US\$100 million to support the company’s growth and development.[8] Following the investment, Maltego introduced browser‑based investigation capabilities and simplified data access aimed at both novice and advanced investigators.[9]

Acquisition of PublicSonar and Social Network Harvester

[edit]

In April 2024, Maltego acquired PublicSonar and Social Network Harvester to expand its all‑in‑one investigation platform.[10] PublicSonar, developed in the Netherlands, provided large‑scale, real‑time monitoring for physical security and public safety and was later rebranded as Maltego Monitor. Social Network Harvester, used for social network analysis and preservation of social media data as court‑admissible evidence, was rebranded as Maltego Evidence.[11]

Acquisition of Hunchly

[edit]

In May 2025, Maltego acquired Hunchly, a tool for capturing and preserving online evidence, to expand its OSINT capabilities.[12] Hunchly, launched in 2015 by Dark River Systems and later supported by Sapper Labs, specializes in secure web evidence collection (including full‑page content, metadata, timestamps, and cryptographic hashes). Its integration into Maltego enables workflows that link evidence collection with analysis and reporting.[13]

Product

[edit]

In 2023, Maltego began transitioning from a single link‑analysis tool to an all‑in‑one platform for a range of users, including novice investigators, trained OSINT analysts, and technical investigators in law enforcement agencies, government institutions, cyber threat intelligence teams, and enterprises worldwide.[14]

Tools in the platform

[edit]
  • Maltego Graph (formerly the desktop client) for complex OSINT investigations with API integrations.[15]
  • Maltego Search (introduced in late 2023 as OSINT Profiler) for browser‑based, preliminary OSINT searches.[16]
  • Maltego Monitor (formerly PublicSonar) for real‑time monitoring.[17]
  • Maltego Evidence (formerly Social Network Harvester) for social network analysis and evidentiary preservation.[18]
  • Hunchly integration for forensic web evidence capture.[19]

Data and services

[edit]

The platform provides access to internal and third‑party sources via the Maltego Data Pass, pre‑built Connectors, and Connector Builders, with credit allowances for some third‑party data in paid plans.[20] Maltego also offers training via Maltego Academy, advisory and custom engineering services, and administrative tooling for enterprise customers.[21]
