Mai: Child of Ages is an adventure video game developed and published by the Italian independent studio Chubby Pixel.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
The title was announced in 2024 and is scheduled for release in 2025 on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
Plot
[edit]The game follows the story of Mai, a young heroine who can travel through different stages of her life thanks to the mysterious Uroboro Stone.
The player explores a world scarred by the Last Great War, journeying across landscapes that shift over time and uncovering secrets of lost civilizations, ancient ruins, and a sacred plant capable of connecting different eras.
Gameplay
[edit]Mai: Child of Ages blends multiple gameplay genres:
- Hack and Slash combat, with different weapons and abilities depending on Mai’s age.
- Platforming sections, featuring exploration and environmental puzzles.
- Puzzle solving, where the player manipulates time and switches between ages to overcome obstacles and unlock hidden areas.
The core mechanic is time manipulation, which allows the player to change Mai’s age (childhood, adolescence, adulthood), each providing unique abilities required to progress.
Development
[edit]The game is developed by Chubby Pixel, known for indie titles such as Suicide Guy and The Deer.
Development spanned several years, with the goal of creating an adventure that mixes fairy-tale atmospheres, puzzles, and dynamic action.
The original soundtrack, featuring more than 50 orchestral tracks, was composed specifically for the game to reflect the different playable ages.
