MX3 is a Philippine brand of dietary supplements and functional foods derived from the mangosteen fruit. It is owned and distributed by DMI Medical Supply Company, Inc., a pharmaceutical and natural health products company headquartered in Davao City.[1] Launched in 2006,[2] the brand has become widely available in the Philippines and is distributed in over 20 countries.[3]
History
[edit]DMI Medical Supply Company, Inc. was established in Davao City on June 17, 2003, initially operating as a distributor of pharmaceutical products.[1][4] The company's expansion into natural supplements was driven by the family of its founders, who had a background in pharmacy and personal experience with the traditional uses of mangosteen for health.[4]
The MX3 brand was officially launched in 2006, starting with the MX3 Capsule, a dietary supplement based on the pericarp (rind) of the Garcinia mangostana fruit.[2] The brand's name, MX3, is reportedly an abbreviation for "Miracles from Mangosteen for the Trinity."[4] The product line later expanded to include coffee and tea mixes to broaden its consumer base.[3] The company holds a License to Operate from the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA)[5] and owns the "PHILIPPINES MX3 ORIGINAL" trademark.[6]
Products
[edit]The MX3 product line is based on the purported antioxidant properties of xanthone compounds found in mangosteen.[7]
- MX3 Capsule: A dietary supplement containing Garcinia mangostana powder.
- MX3 Coffee Mix: An instant coffee blend containing non-dairy creamer, sugar, and mangosteen powder. It is marketed as a "high source of Vitamin C and calcium."[8]
- MX3 Tea: An herbal tea blend in tea bags.
- MX3 Soap: A cosmetic soap containing mangosteen extract.
These products are sold in major pharmacy chains in the Philippines, such as Watsons,[9] as well as in supermarkets and convenience stores.
Scientific Research
[edit]A 2014 pilot clinical study funded by DMI Medical was published in the Journal of Aging Research & Clinical Practice. The study examined the effects of MX3 capsules on knee discomfort in 36 participants over 28 days. While it did not find statistically significant improvements in the short term, the authors suggested that "long-term use of MX3 might reduce knee joint discomfort" and recommended further research.[10]
According to the company, third-party laboratory tests from Nutrasource Diagnostics and Northfield Laboratories have been conducted to verify the xanthone content and screen for microbial contaminants.[11] These analyses pertain to product composition and safety, not therapeutic efficacy.
Philanthropy
[edit]The company allocates a portion of its revenue to the DMIRIE Foundation Inc., its non-profit, faith-based philanthropic arm.[12] The foundation, accredited by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC),[13] engages in community outreach, provides educational scholarships, and supports religious ministries.[4]
