M. L. Wang (born 1992) is an American fantasy author best known for her self-published novel The Sword of Kaigen.
Biography
[edit]Wang was born in Wisconsin in 1992.[1] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and later began teaching and training at a martial arts school, alongside her writing career.[2][3]
Career and works
[edit]Wang is the author of The Sword of Kaigen (2019), a Japanese-inspired military fantasy that serves as a companion novel to her earlier Theonite series.[4] The novel went on to win the 2019 Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off (SPFBO) competition organized by author Mark Lawrence.[5]
She later published Blood Over Bright Haven (2023) and The Volta Academy Chronicles, the latter written under the name “Maya Lin Wang.”[2]
Critical reception
[edit]The Sword of Kaigen received positive critical attention. *The Fantasy Hive* praised its emotional range and detailed worldbuilding.[4] *Dear Author* described the novel’s characters as complex and its social commentary compelling, though noted moments of heavy exposition.[6]
In a review for *Tor.com*, critic Vanessa Armstrong called it “a standout in self-published fantasy,” highlighting Wang’s “masterful blending of action, emotion, and worldbuilding.”[7]
