Draft:Loimaa (urban area)

Loimaan keskustaajama (lit.'Loimaa central urban area') is the administrative center of the Loimaa municipality in Southwest Finland, Finland. At the end of 2021, the population of the urban area, in accordance with Statistics Finland's agglomeration area, was 8,636 [1] which made it the most-populated urban area of the municipality.[2]

With the completion of the Turku–Toijala railway in 1876, it brought considerable development to the whole Loimaa area. The railway brought with it new economic activity that kick-started industrial development; a railway station was built in Loimaa as soon as the railway was completed, and by the early 20th century the town's current centre had grown up around it. The Loimaa station district was made a separate market town from the Loimaan maalaiskunta (lit.'Loimaa rural municipality', later 'Loimaa municipality', not to be confused with the current town) in 1921 and was granted town rights in 1969.[3] Around the same time, the current national road 9 was completed.[4] National road 2 also passed through the centre of Loimaa before the completion of its current alignment. Nowadays, the regional road 213 runs through the centre.[5]

However, the urban area remains as the commercial and economic center of the whole sub-region. The most notable public services are the regional hospital[6], the secondary school (lukio)[7] and several governmental offices. Most important sights include the well-known market square[8] and the city art museum. Aleksis Kiven katu street has become a major commercial hub, with Prisma[9] and K-Citymarket[10] among others.
