Lizzi Whaley (née Hines) is a New Zealand business executive and interior architecture specialist. Whaley served as a judge on the eighth season of the reality TV renovation series The Block NZ.[1][2][3] She is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and owner of Spaceworks Interior Architecture, a commercial design studio based in Auckland.[4]

Early life and education

Whaley completed a Bachelor of Spatial Design at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in 2002.[5][6]

Career

Whaley spent the first 9 years of her career at Aalto Colour, a bespoke paint manufacturer, where she developed an interest in colour and paint schemes.[6]

Whaley joined Spaceworks as a designer in 2004 and purchased the firm two years later, becoming CEO at age 28.[7][8]In 2012, she won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.[9][10]

Whaley founded the razor-subscription start-up Shave Union in 2015.[11]

In 2018, Whaley and Focus Construction Interiors were in a High Court dispute over a previously settled agreement, which concluded in 2020.[12] Whaley later said that successfully defending the case was a turning point for the business.[13]

In 2019, Whaley became a judge on season 8 of the New Zealand renovation reality show The Block NZ.[14][1][2]Known for her direct and constructive feedback, she brought a commercial design perspective to the judging panel.[2][14]

In 2021, her firm Spaceworks won the Westpac Supreme Award.[15]

Whaley approached Toitū Envirocare to develop and build a carbon calculator for the New Zealand building industry in collaboration with Spaceworks, which the company launched in 2022.[16] In 2023, the studio introduced an in-house carbon calculator to measure and reduce the embodied emissions of interior projects.[17][18]

In 2021, Whaley shared her personal experience of coming out later in life in NZ Herald’s Viva.[19]

Philanthropy

Through Shave Union, Whaley donated 10 percent of revenue to small community grants.[11]
