The DC Universe (DCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe that is the setting of superhero films and television series produced by DC Studios, based on characters that appear in DC Comics publications. DC Studios developed the DCU as a soft reboot of the prior DC Comics–based franchise, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), that retains certain cast members of the DCEU while replacing others. No actor is set to portray multiple characters, although some actors have various voice roles, with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran expecting the same actors to play characters across mediums, including animation. Because of the franchise's shared narrative, multiple actors lead various projects.
The DCU's first slate of content is Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which includes eight feature films: Superman (2025), Supergirl (2026), Clayface (2026), Man of Tomorrow (2027), The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and an untitled Wonder Woman film, as well as six seasons of series: the first season of the animated Creature Commandos (2024–25), the second season of Peacemaker (2025), Lanterns (2026), Booster Gold, Waller, and Paradise Lost. Also in development are films for the Teen Titans team, the duo of Bane and Deathstroke, and Sgt. Rock, as well as an animated Blue Beetle series and the animated series Mister Miracle, a second season of Creature Commandos, and the Superman spin-off series DC Crime.
For the DCU films, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan headline Superman as Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane; Milly Alcock will headline Supergirl as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl; Tom Rhys Harries will headline Clayface as Matt Hagen / Clayface; and Nicholas Hoult will co-headline Man of Tomorrow as Lex Luthor with Corenswet, after first appearing in Superman.
For the DCU television series, Frank Grillo headlines the animated series Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr. alongside Indira Varma as the Bride, the series' main protagonist. John Cena headlines Peacemaker season two, reprising his DCEU role as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre will co-headline Lanterns as the Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Viola Davis reprises her DCEU role as Amanda Waller in Creature Commandos and will headline her own series, Waller. Xolo Maridueña will headline the animated Blue Beetle series, reprising his DCEU role of Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle, while Skyler Gisondo will headline DC Crime as Jimmy Olsen.
Additional cast members from the DCEU film The Suicide Squad (2021) and the first season of Peacemaker (2022) reprise their roles in Creature Commandos, including Steve Agee as John Economos, who also returns for Waller, and Sean Gunn as Weasel; Gunn also voices G.I. Robot in Creature Commandos and portrays Maxwell Lord in Superman and Peacemaker. Other DCEU cast members who appear within the franchise but in new roles include Nathan Fillion, who played Cory Pitzner / T.D.K. (The Detachable Kid) in The Suicide Squad, as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in Superman, Peacemaker, and Lanterns, and Jason Momoa, who portrays Lobo starting with Supergirl after previously playing Aquaman in the DCEU. Some actors voice multiple characters in animated projects, including Alan Tudyk as Alex Sartorius / Doctor Phosphorus, Will Magnus, and Clayface in Creature Commandos.
