Lavita Lobo (born 12 August 1993) is an Indian playback singer, songwriter, live performer, and author known for her work in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, and Konkani music. Trained in Western classical music, she is praised for her versatility, powerful vocals, and poetic expression. Lavita is also an author and a former national-level roller skater.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Lavita Lobo was born in Mangalore, Karnataka, to entrepreneurs Ivan and Philomena Lobo. As a child, she represented her city and state in roller skating competitions, winning more than 25 medals including gold and silver at state and national levels.[1] She trained in keyboard from a young age and was an active member of her church choir as both keyboardist and vocalist. At 15, she won the title of "Rani Kogul" (Queen Nightingale) in a Konkani reality TV contest, which marked the beginning of her performance career.[2]

She completed her schooling at St. Agnes School, Mangalore, and earned a BCom in Marketing and Human Resources from St. Aloysius College, where she was inducted into the institution's Hall of Fame.[2] Later, she received a scholarship to KM College of Music and Technology, a conservatory in Chennai founded by A. R. Rahman, where she studied Western classical music and won the award for Best Western Classical Vocalist.[1]

Career

[edit]

Lavita began performing at the age of 15, when she won the Konkani reality TV show Soad 2, earning the title of Rani Kogul (Queen Nightingale).[2] She worked briefly as a radio jockey at Radio Mirchi before transitioning fully into music.[1]

She gained national recognition in 2014 after winning the Mangalore regional round of the Benadryl Big Golden Voice competition by 92.7 Big FM.[3] Her first major break in playback singing came with the track "Daang Daang" in the Telugu film Sarileru Neekevvaru (2020) alongside Nakash Aziz.[4] Since then, she has contributed vocals to several notable film songs, "Woo Aa Aha" from F3: Fun and Frustration (2022), alongside Sunidhi Chauhan;[5] "Yolo" from Kanguva (2024), a duet with Devi Sri Prasad;[6][7] "Naayaka" from Kanguva, as part of a vocal ensemb[8]"Thalaivane" from Kanguva, performed by a 17-member choir including Lobo;[9] and "Why Are We Wandering" from Demonte Colony 2 (2024).[10][11]

She is also a songwriter, having written lyrics for film songs and independent music. Her original song "Have You Ever Wondered" was shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Lavita is also a frequent live performer and is active in the Chennai musical theatre scene.[1]

Artistic style

[edit]

Lavita’s music blends Indian film melodies with pop, rock, and soul influences. She is classically trained in Western music and is currently expanding into Carnatic styles and music production. She often writes her own lyrics and believes in constant creative reinvention.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Lavita is married to music director Jerry Silvester Vincent. They currently reside in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Outside of music, she enjoys poetry, traveling, and creative writing.[1]
