The Lago d'Avio is an artificial lake located at 1908 meters above sea level, in Val d'Avio , a tributary of Val Camonica in the Province of Brescia.
History
[edit]Together with the Laghetto d'Avio, a small basin located just below it, Lago d'Avio is the only one among the reservoirs in the valley to have a natural origin. However, both underwent expansion works, with the construction of dams, between the First and Second World Wars, to create two reservoirs to supply the hydroelectric power station in Temù, thanks to the significant elevation difference between the upper and lower valley. The dam containing Lago d'Avio was built in 1929.
In the years following the end of the Second World War, the valley's hydroelectric system was enhanced with the creation of the Lake Benedetto, Lago Pantano d'Avio , and Lago Venerocolo reservoirs, which, being located at higher elevations, form part of the Lago d'Avio basin.
The Temù power station is no longer active, as in the early 1980s, the Edolo hydroelectric power station was built, directly fed by the waters of Lago d'Avio. The power station provides a maximum output of 1000 MW and, during periods of surplus energy, such as at night, is equipped with powerful pumps capable of returning water from the valley basin to the lake.
Description
[edit]The gravity dam supporting the lake is made of concrete, is 37.52 meters high, and 306 meters long at the crest.
The lake formed by the dam is 985 meters long, 570 meters wide, and up to 79 meters deep; it has a full-capacity volume of 12,383,000 cubic meters (25,350,000 cubic meters according to other sources). Due to the significant presence of tiny granite rock fragments in suspension, the water often appears light gray and rather turbid.[1]
Access
[edit]Although there is a cableway supporting the Enel facilities, this system does not provide public transport services, so the lake can only be reached on foot.[2]
The route is marked by trail number 11 of the CAI sections of Val Camonica. The first section of the path, from the town of Temù to Malga Caldea (1584 m), is a forest road, somewhat rough in places but passable by car (preferably off-road). Near the malga, there is a parking area that can accommodate a few dozen vehicles.
From the malga, one ascends the imposing rocky step separating the lower from the middle Val d'Avio , following a paved service road normally closed to traffic, until reaching the Palazzina, a group of buildings owned by ENEL, located at an elevation of 1904 meters, just above the Laghetto d'Avio. From there, the path continues alongside the lakes, remaining slightly higher than their shores.
