King Living is an Australian furniture manufacturer and retailer founded in 1977 in Sydney by David King.[1][2] The company produces modular sofas and other furniture, and operates showrooms in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.[3][4] It has also operated manufacturing facilities in China, Thailand and Australia.
History
[edit]King Living was founded in Sydney by David King, who began making foam furniture with his mother, Gwen, in their family garage.[1][5] In 1987, the company introduced the Postureflex seating system, which uses steel frames instead of the more common wooden structures.[2][6] The business operated as King Furniture until 2015, when it was renamed King Living.[6]
In 2022, David Woollcott, a former executive at BMW Group and Miele, was appointed CEO. King continues to be involved with the company as Director.[5]
Product milestones and design legacy
[edit]In 1998, King Living introduced the Delta, a modular sofa designed with a steel frame that allowed for multiple configurations, including use as a bed. The Delta was used at the 2006 Vanity Fair Oscars party, an appearance that brought wider attention to the design.[7]
In 2003, the company released the Jasper, which has remained one of its most popular models. Later versions incorporated features such as integrated storage and adjustable headrests.[1]
In 2024, King Living launched a redesigned version of its original 1977 sofa, marketed as The 1977 Sofa. The model won two Red Dot Design Awards for its indoor and outdoor versions.[8][9][10]
Sustainability
[edit]King Living has incorporated modular and replaceable components in some of its furniture designs, which the company states are intended to extend product lifecycles.[5][11] The business operates a vertically integrated manufacturing system, controlling design, production, and distribution.[2][12]
International expansion
[edit]King Living opened its first overseas showrooms in Singapore, Malaysia, and China. In 2018, it expanded into Canada[4] and the United Kingdom. As of 2024, the company reported operating 28 stores worldwide, with more than a third outside Australia.[3] In December 2024, King Living announced the opening of a showroom in Orange County, California, and indicated plans for additional locations in Chicago and Calgary.[3][12][13]
Awards and recognition
[edit]King Living has received recognition in international and national design competitions. In 2024, its 1977 Sofa won two Red Dot Design Awards in the indoor and outdoor furniture categories.[8][9][10] In 2023, the company received multiple Australian Good Design Awards, including recognition for the Jasper Sofa 20th Anniversary Edition and the Aura Sofa.[14] In 2025, King Living was awarded two iF Design Awards for the 1978 High Back Sofa and the Plateau Outdoor collection.[15][16]
The company and its products have also been featured in publications such as The Straits Times, Vogue Living, and the Australian Financial Review, which have covered its furniture design and international expansion.[2][1][7]
